The Hands We Choose: A Lesson in Trusting God

A random memory just crossed my mind, and I feel compelled to share it because it reveals something profound about trust—how we vet people, how we come to trust them, and how that trust shapes our decisions.

Let’s rewind more than a decade to 2011. It was my freshman year on campus, and during the first week of resumption, my department’s student association organized a trip for the new students. They took us to Erin Ijesa Waterfall for a party, a place that has since changed significantly. Back then, there were no stairs—just the raw, rugged rocks that we had to climb. While going up was relatively easy, coming back down was a different story.

After hours of fun, it was time to descend. By then, exhaustion had set in. The climb down wasn’t straightforward—you had to carefully find solid ground, hold onto whatever you could, and navigate your way down, sometimes by sliding. My legs were shaking from fatigue, and I suddenly found myself stuck at a tricky spot with no clear foothold.

Two of my classmates, whom I had only met a few days prior—had already made it down. One of them, Damola, extended his hand to help me. I looked at him, but hesitation gripped me. In my mind, I analyzed his stature—he was slim, and I doubted his ability to support me. I didn’t trust him enough to place my life in his hands.

Then, the second guy noticed my hesitation. He understood that my reluctance wasn’t about the action but about trust. So, he extended his hand as well. He was bigger, looked stronger, and immediately, I felt safer. Without hesitation, I took his hand and let him guide me down.

That moment has stayed with me, not just as a memory but as a lesson about how we often approach trust—especially when it comes to trusting God.

Trust in Action

God tells us to trust Him. Over and over again, He reassures us. He sent His Son, Jesus, who told us plainly:

“In this world, you will have tribulation.

But be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world.”

(John 16:33)

Yet, despite God’s proven track record of faithfulness, how often do we hesitate to take His extended hands? He has never failed, yet we hold back. We overanalyze, we rationalize, we look for “safer” options that seem more reliable based on our limited understanding.

But trust isn’t just a word, it is an action.

If I say I trust my parents, it means I rely on their wisdom and guidance. If I trust my partner, it means I believe in his leadership and the direction we are heading together. Similarly, when we say we trust God, it must be evident in our actions. Are we taking His outstretched hand? Are we surrendering our fears and letting Him lead us?

Too often, we claim to trust God, but our actions say otherwise. We hesitate, we hold back, we choose what looks safer in our eyes rather than what He has offered us. But true trust means stepping out in faith, believing that the One who has never failed will not start failing now.

God is ever-present. He does not disappoint. And being confident in this, we must respond—not just with words, but with action. We must take the hand He extends, listen to His voice, obey His guidance, and walk in the path He sets before us.

Today, I hope this reminder blesses you as much as it blesses me. May we learn to trust God completely, not just in words but in action.

Have a wonderful day!
